Invasive Beetle Tracking
- Our Development Time
- 3 weeks
- Equipment Used
- Laser Cutter, FDM 3D Printer
- Materials
- Acrylic, OTS Bearings, Arduino Nano
- Expertise Leveraged
- Coding, CAD Design, Rapid Prototyping, Iterative Design
The Brief
Develop an initial prototype of a smart trap to help monitor and track invasive bark beetles.
Our Solution
We designed the proof of principle trap in CAD, then built it from laser-cut acrylic and 3D-printed parts with off-the-shelf bearings. A motor-driven belt and gear mechanism, controlled by an Arduino Nano, moves the internal panels. We developed the design through rapid, iterative prototyping.
The Impact
A functional proof of principle prototype was delivered to enable initial machine learning training & benchtop testing.
